Port Douglas Reef Charters can give you excellent advice about selecting the perfect sailing charter to island destinations off the coast of Port Douglas. Low Isles is one such destination. Low Isles is a coral cay island which lies approximately 8 nautical miles off the coast of Port Douglas.
Low Isles is situated on a large coral platform and consists of a small coral cay, a large mangrove island, mudflats, sea grass beds, and coral reefs. There is a beautiful lagoon which provides shelter from strong winds and swells on windy days. The lagoon is frequented by green turtles and as a protected Green Zone; remains populated with large numbers of tropical fish and giant clams.
Weather data has been collected on Low Isles since 1887 and scientific associations date back to 1928 when it was the base for a year long scientific survey which studied the structure and ecology of the surrounding reef, conducted by National Geographic researchers.
This study was the first detailed study of a coral reef from Low Isles anywhere in the world and many current theories of coral reef are based on the findings of this expedition.
Low isles is the perfect destination for family groups with small children or swimmers that are not confident in the water. You can snorkel right off the beach at Low Isles. Most of the Low Isles reef tour operators have glass bottom boats as well. Glass bottom tours are included in the fare price
Sailing is the ultimate form of relaxation on the water and a great way to explore the reefs and islands of tropical north Queensland. The Great Barrier Reef and islands are very close to Port Douglas. There is nothing as exhilarating as sailing on the Great Barrier Reef in Port Douglas.
Low Isles is a historic part of The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Named by Captain Cook in 1770, the cays were the site of the first extensive scientific study of a coral reef anywhere in the world in 1928, and their landmark lighthouse has greeted visitors since 1878.
Low Isles and its historic lighthouse were registered on the Commonwealth Heritage List in June 2008 in recognition of their place in Australia's cultural and Indigenous heritage. Relax - the whole of this beautiful, palm fringed island beach is yours to explore and enjoy.
